MICHAEL GIRA
interview Alicia Wade

What normal activities do you do during the day - for example, do you watch TV?
I work all day, usually long hours. I run Young God records, which requires a great deal of time. I also service CD orders from our website. I write songs. I prepare for tours, my own and others, write press releases. Occasionally listen to demos. At night I read. Sometimes I watch CNN.

What books have you been reading lately?
Will You Still Miss Me When I'm Gone - The Carter Family And Their Legacy In American Music by Mark Zwonitzer
Wide Sargasso Sea - Jean Rhys
Granta - The First 21 Years

I'm assuming you have a home studio - what do you use to record at home?
I don't have a home studio - never had the energy to get that together. I record songs direct to a DAT machine, then think about how to arrange them, either live or in a studio.

Are you more of a dirty city person or rural woodsy out in the sticks kind of person?
I am a rural person who lives in a very dirty city.

Do you have a favorite number?
No.

What are your eating habits like?
I eat irregularly.

Are you and have you ever been in love?
Yes.

What record, CDs, or cassettes are you listening to these days?
Last night I listened to the Best Of George Jones and Scanner.

Do you dream? Or remember your dreams? And if so what are they usually about?
My dreams are private. I do remember them, unfortunately.

What is in store for the future of Michael Gira?
I will continue to make music.

Are you currently accepting material and/or demos for Young God Records?
No, but thanks for asking
